A heritage researcher and author, Mr. Yaw Acheampong Opare, has presented his newly compiled book documenting Ghana’s remaining forts and castles to the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie. The presentation highlighted his commitment to preserving Ghana’s historical monuments and promoting national heritage awareness.
The book provides a detailed documentation of all surviving forts and castles across the country, some well-preserved, others deteriorating due to limited care. Through this publication, Mr. Opare aims to raise national awareness about these significant historical structures while encouraging stronger preservation and restoration efforts.
His work also highlights the importance of telling Ghana’s own story, particularly concerning heritage sites that have long been interpreted through external narratives. The author believes the resource will serve not only Ghanaians but also visitors and members of the diaspora seeking deeper connections with the country’s past. He sees the book as a potential tool for advancing a “pilgrimage agenda,” helping people trace their roots and engage more meaningfully with Ghana’s cultural legacy.
Mr. Opare emphasised that, understanding the value of existing heritage assets is essential to preserving and monetizing them sustainably, adding that greater awareness will help Ghanaians better appreciate what the nation possesses and inspire collective efforts toward cultural preservation.
Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie expressed appreciation for the work, describing it as a valuable contribution to cultural preservation and a useful resource for promoting tourism and heritage education.
