Accra – 20th November, 2025 – Ghana’s creative sector is set to receive a significant boost following a high-level engagement between the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, and the leadership of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The meeting, held with WIPO Director General, Daren Tang and senior officials, focused on building capacity for Ghanaian creatives, expanding protection for intellectual property, and deepening collaboration between Africa and the Caribbean through cultural exchange.
Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie reflected on her 40-year journey in the creative industry, stressing her urgency and dedication as a political appointee. She noted that her passion is shaped by her own struggles for recognition and intellectual property protection as an artist. Recalling her work on “By the Fireside” including presenting it internationally in 1994, she highlighted the need for greater access to global best practices to better equip Ghanaian creators.
Hon. Gomashie underscored the power of cultural diplomacy, citing the Afro Gastro initiative as a model for using food and music to connect cultures. She emphasised fair compensation and long-term royalties for creators across all art forms, highlighting her sister’s batik designs as an example of how Ghanaian creativity often goes uncredited globally. Stressing the need for stronger intellectual property protections, she expressed confidence that the new partnership with WIPO will equip today’s creatives with the IP knowledge and tools her generation lacked.
WIPO Director General Daren Tang reaffirmed strong support for Ghana’s creative sector, noting WIPO’s readiness to extend its work with Collective Management Organizations to Ghana. He highlighted the “WIPO for Creators – CLIP” platform, which makes copyright easier for creators and will soon expand beyond music to other art forms. Tang also referenced the upcoming “World IP Place / WIPO Phase” initiative linking creatives across Africa and the Caribbean, identifying Ghana as a key partner and praising Hon. Gomashie’s influence as both a policymaker and
Beatril Borhel, WIPO’s Director of Development Cooperation, highlighted the organization’s long-term mentorship programmes for artists, game developers, app creators and other digital entrepreneurs. She announced that the new WIPO Phase platform, launching in June, will provide ongoing support beyond initial training. Borhel also revealed plans for a major Africa–Caribbean creative convening next year, to be hosted in Africa.
Hon. Gomashie endorsed WIPO’s proposals and urged closer collaboration with the Ministry to ensure quick implementation. She emphasized empowering Ghanaian creatives to gain recognition and access decision-making spaces, noting her commitment to creating opportunities she never had.
With the upcoming Caribbean–Africa Creative Exchange, both sides expressed readiness to deepen cooperation, expand capacity-building and elevate Ghanaian art, culture and innovation globally.
