Kumasi – 26th November, 2025 – Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie has announced renewed government efforts to revive stalled cultural and creative projects in the Ashanti Region as part of a broader plan to strengthen Ghana’s creative sector.
“The Minister made the commitment during a courtesy call on the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, on Tuesday, as part of her ongoing regional tour, which has now reached the Ashanti Region and includes visits to selected tourist and cultural sites.”
Hon. Gomashie said the Mahama administration recognises the arts as a key driver of national development and is implementing deliberate measures to elevate the sector. She noted that her appointment as a creative professional reflects the President’s confidence in the industry’s potential to contribute significantly to Ghana’s cultural and economic transformation.
She disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has expressed interest in reviving Ghana’s theatre tradition, with plans for quarterly national theatre productions starting in 2026, along with efforts to restore the once-popular Concert Party performance culture. The Ministry, she said, is preparing to operationalise these initiatives.
The sector minister added that her visit to the region included a planned homage to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his role in promoting Ghana’s cultural heritage globally. Although the Asantehene was out of the country, she pledged to return before the end of the year to formally pay her respects, describing him as a transformative traditional leader whose influence enhances Ghana’s tourism appeal.
The Minister also commended the Ashanti Regional Minister for his continued support for the creative sector and expressed optimism that strengthened collaboration among government, regional authorities and industry players would help revive Kumawood, complete key cultural infrastructure and boost the national creative economy.
The Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who welcomed the Minister, said the creative community in the region, particularly called Kumawood, has shown renewed enthusiasm after being acknowledged in the national budget for the first time. He described the recognition as an encouraging sign of the government’s commitment to the film and creative industries.
However, he raised concerns about the stalled Ashanti Regional Amphitheatre, which he said was expected to be completed in 2023 but is now halfway through. He called for sustained engagement between stakeholders and the Ministry to ensure the progress of work.
The Minister was accompanied by Directors from the Ministry, Divine Kwame Owusu Ansah and Jeoffery Tamakloe, and the Ashanti Regional Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts Agency staff.
