Accra, Ghana – January 15, 2026 — The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts (MoTCCA) has signed an agreement with the W.E.B. Du Bois Museum Foundation, to facilitate the financial management and redevelopment of the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre in Accra.
The agreement, which follows extensive consultations and legal engagements, addresses all concerns surrounding asset ownership, governance and revenue sharing. Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, assured stakeholders that the interests of the State have been fully safeguarded under the revised terms.
She explained that the agreement retains all existing assets as property of the Government of Ghana, establishes a clearly defined project duration, provides for agreed revenue-sharing arrangements, and introduces governance structures approved at the highest level, including by His Excellency the President. The Minister described the agreement as balanced and firmly in the national interest.
“With the President’s blessing, the Ministry is fully committed to supporting this project to ensure it meets international cultural and heritage standards for the benefit of Ghana,” she said.
Speaking on behalf of the Foundation, the Lead Representative, Mr. Japhet Aryiku, expressed appreciation to government officials and legal teams for their dedication and cooperation. He reaffirmed his long-standing commitment to Ghana’s development, citing previous initiatives such as the establishment of computer centres across the country at no cost to the State.
Mr. Aryiku outlined plans to raise approximately US$200 million, with about US$180 million earmarked for the construction and development of the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre. He expressed confidence that the project would be completed within three years and would significantly enhance tourism, global engagement and awareness of Ghana as the final resting place of the renowned Pan-Africanist intellectual, Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois.
Both parties emphasised that the project is non-extractive and permanent, with all developments remaining the property of Ghana for future generations. The meeting called for sustained collaboration among government, the Foundation and other stakeholders to maximise the Centre’s cultural, educational and tourism potential while telling Ghana’s story to the world.
Present at the signing ceremony were the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Yussif Issaka Jajah, the Chief Director, Mr. Joseph Kwasi Amoah, the Director for Culture and Creative Arts, Mr. Divine Kwame Owusu Ansa, the Executive Director of the W.E.B.
